High-pass Filter
Attenuate frequencies below a chosen cutoff and leave the ones above it.
Passes frequencies above the cutoff and progressively attenuates everything below it. It is the usual first move against rumble, handling noise, air conditioning and other low-frequency mush on a spoken-word recording.
Where to find it
Effect → EQ and filters → High-pass filter.
Controls
- Frequency (Hz) — the cutoff. Default 1000, minimum 0.
- Roll-off (dB per octave) — how steeply the level falls away below the cutoff: 6, 12, 24, 36 or 48 dB. Default 6 dB.
Notes
The cutoff is the point at which attenuation begins, not a hard wall — with a 6 dB roll-off the reduction is gentle and reaches into the passband, while 48 dB cuts away much more sharply just below the cutoff.
For speech, a cutoff somewhere between 60 and 100 Hz removes rumble without thinning the voice. The effect has a preview, so try a setting before applying it.
