Effects
Noise Removal & Repair
Effects that clean up recordings — steady background noise, clicks, and short damaged passages.
These effects are for fixing problems rather than shaping sound: hiss or hum running under a whole recording, clicks and crackle scattered through it, a gate to shut the gaps between phrases, and a repair tool for very short stretches that are damaged beyond filtering.
Where to find it
The Noise removal and repair submenu of the Effect menu, with audio selected.
Notes
Clean-up belongs early, before levelling or equalisation, because a noise floor that is left in place gets raised along with everything else.
All of these effects trade fidelity against the problem they are removing. Use the smallest setting that solves it: pushing noise reduction hard produces a distinctive bubbling or metallic quality that is more distracting than the noise was.
- Click Removal Find and remove clicks and pops across a whole selection.
- Clip Fix Rebuild the flattened tops of clipped waveforms by interpolating across them.
- Noise Gate Attenuate or silence audio that falls below a threshold, to clean up gaps between sounds.
- Noise Reduction Remove steady background noise by first profiling it, then filtering the whole recording.
- Repair Reconstruct a very short damaged fragment from the audio on either side of it.
