Fading

Effects that ramp the level of a selection up or down, or cross one piece of audio into another.

A fade changes level gradually across the whole of a selection rather than by a fixed amount. The group covers the plain linear fades, shaped fades where you choose the curve, and crossfades that take one piece of audio out while bringing another in.

Where to find it

The Fading submenu of the Effect menu, with audio selected.

How fades use the selection

The fade always spans exactly the selection: it starts at its beginning and finishes at its end. To change how long a fade lasts, change the length of the selection, not a setting in a dialog.

Notes

Fades are also the cure for a click at a cut point. A few milliseconds of fade at the start and end of a clip removes the abrupt step in the waveform that causes it.
