Effects

Paulstretch

Stretch audio by extreme factors to produce sustained, ambient textures.

Paulstretch is not a general-purpose time stretcher. It is built for very large stretch factors, where the point is the smeared, drone-like texture that comes out rather than a faithful slow-down. Ordinary tempo work is better done with Sliding stretch.

The Paulstretch dialog

Where to find it

Effect → Pitch and tempo → Paulstretch, with audio selected.

Controls

  • Stretch factor — how many times longer the result is than the original. Minimum 1, default 10.
  • Time resolution — the length of the analysis window, in seconds. Minimum roughly 0.001 s, default 0.25 s.

Notes

Time resolution is the trade-off that shapes the sound. Short windows keep more of the original rhythm and transients but sound grainier; long windows smooth everything into a sustained pad and lose all trace of the attack.

Because the output is many times longer than the input, applying a large stretch factor to a long selection takes a long time and produces a great deal of audio. Try it on a few seconds first.
