Generators

Generators

Plug-ins that create new audio rather than change audio you already have.

A generator writes audio from nothing — a tone, a noise, a rhythm, a plucked string, or an exactly flat stretch of silence. Generators are how you make test signals, tuning references, click tracks and timing gaps without recording anything.

Where to find them

The Generate menu.

How generation works

Generation starts at the beginning of the selection, or at the cursor if nothing is selected. Most generators ask for a duration and write that much audio from that point.

Notes

Some generators are built into Audacity and some are Nyquist plug-ins; they sit together in the same menu.
