Effects

Volume & Compression

Effects that set how loud audio is and how wide the gap between its loud and quiet parts.

Everything in this group works on level. Some effects move the whole selection up or down by a fixed amount; others change loud and quiet passages by different amounts, narrowing the distance between them so that a track sits more steadily in a mix or holds a consistent loudness from end to end.

Where to find it

The Volume and compression submenu of the Effect menu, with audio selected.

Notes

Level effects are usually the last thing you apply, once the editing and cleaning are done, because anything you do afterwards changes the peaks they were working to.

The Compressor and the Limiter can also be added to a track’s effects panel and heard live during playback — see Realtime Effects.
