Preferences
Audacity's settings, page by page.
Preferences hold the settings that apply to Audacity itself rather than to the open project, so they persist between sessions. Open them from Edit → Preferences — on macOS, from the application menu.
The dialog is split into pages down the left-hand side. The pages below describe what each one covers.
- General Language, number format, updates, temporary files and FFmpeg.
- Appearance Theme, interface colours, font and clip style.
- Audio settings Audio API, devices, sample rate, buffer size and meter range.
- Audio editing Paste, delete and effect behaviour, and stereo handling.
- Playback/Recording Cursor behaviour, playback performance, and recording options.
- Spectral display Spectrogram algorithm, scale, colours and selection.
- Music Tempo detection for imported audio.
- Export The export prompt, and where saves go by default.
- Shortcuts Reassign keyboard shortcuts.
- Plugins Plugin locations, scanning, and effect options.
